South of the river is Southwark which like a lot of places in London was once quite a deprived area and now has a lot going for it. It includes the London Bridge area which is home to the London Dungeons and the famous Borough Market – both very different places. There are a lot of quality off west end theatres here as well including the Menier Chocolate Factory and Southwark Playhouse as well as Shakespeare’s Globe which is worth a walk around even if you don’t watch a show. In addition, The Shard (I once overheard an American child ask why it was broken) is right next to London Bridge Station and you can pay to go to the top. I wouldn’t if you can get into Sky Garden for free but it’s impressive to stand at the bottom and look up at.
